Bring on the Holiays

By Michelle | December 3, 2007

I put up the Christmas tree today (maybe I’ll get around to decorations tomorrow), and with holiday music playing in the background, warm winter food simmering on the stove, and “light snow possible midweek,” it truly feels like the season is underway. Now if only all those dead leaves still clinging to the trees would just give up the fight and flutter downward…

It’s been quite a while since I last wrote (I guess I’ve been busy and just haven’t been in the mood), but East Asia’s been relatively quiet lately. For a change, it’s Latin America that’s made the headline. There’s Chavez with his constitutional referendum vote in Venezuela (it failed by a thin margin), a variety of political protests in Bolivia, and the recent release of the FARC hostage videos in Colombia.

And then there’s Japan. What passes for news on that side of the Pacific? Well, apparently the Japan Post banks will operate ATMs during New Year holidays–yes, in Japan they haven’t quite caught onto the whole “24-hr ATM” concept. Oh, and according to AFP, some 48-yr old Japanese man (and father of three) in Osaka Prefecture “who privately enjoyed wearing girls’ underwear” was arrested after decorating his neighborhood with girls’ underpants and nylons. When police raided his house, they reportedly found over 200 pairs of underwear. Westerners are just suckers for Japanese weirdo stories (I’m sure there are just as many people with strange habits in the US).
